Q1: What inspired you to write “Somatic Exercise Made Simple?”

A: In 2021, I experienced the loss of both my father and father-in-law while also recovering postpartum. During this time, I turned to yoga and began to understand how somatics, breathwork, movement, and meditation could holistically aid in mental and physical healing. Witnessing the profound impact it had on my own life, I felt compelled to share it with others.

Q2: Who is your book for?

A: My book is for so many people who need this. It provides an accessible way for individuals to heal their bodies and minds, especially those who may feel uncomfortable in traditional yoga settings. It is for people overcoming grief or anxiety and those with injuries. My book is also for trauma survivors who may feel disconnected from their bodies and need to feel safe in their skin again.

Q3: What makes somatic exercises different from yoga?

A: Somatics is accessible and can be done in the comfort of your own home, focusing on movements that feel good for your body at your own pace. It’s about body awareness and healing what you need, unlike yoga, where people may feel they need to be flexible or fit.

Q4: Do I need special equipment or a studio to do these exercises?

A: No, you don’t need a lot of equipment. You don’t have to have any equipment, just a floor and a chair. About half of the exercises in the book can be done seated or standing.

Q5: How much time do I need to dedicate to these exercises to see the benefits?

A: Just 5 to 10 minutes a day can be beneficial. The key is consistency and attuning to your body’s needs. Even simple actions like shoulder rolls and neck stretches during a workday can help release tension.

Q6: What if I’m going through grief or trauma? How can somatic exercises help?

A: Somatic exercises, along with community support, can help you learn that you’re not alone. You can learn from others’ experiences and how they are healing. Even just being a witness to others’ stories can be beneficial until you feel comfortable sharing your own.

Q7: How can somatic exercises address overall well-being?

A: Somatic exercises offer an opportunity to address essentially all your needs in one form, covering the spiritual, mental, emotional, and physical aspects of well-being.

Q8: What was your biggest fear in doing this work, and how did you overcome it?

A: The biggest fear was putting myself out there, fearing judgment and acceptance. I overcame it by recognizing my skills, knowledge, and qualifications and by validating myself throughout the process. Creating a community and receiving positive feedback also helped.
